Apcom E-pens APPEG-030 Mobile Notes is a smart, portable device, which captures handwritten text, drawings, and signatures. It comes in two parts – a pen and a base unit; the pen can be used like a normal pen, but it actually keeps sending information to the base unit as you write. Once you are done taking notes, you can save them on your computer and with the help of the MyScript software, which is included, you can transform your notes into typed text and then easily export them into existing text editors like MS Word and others. The device can be used for drawing and photo editing and works with popular Windows applications like MS Messenger and Outlook.
The Apcom E-pens APPEG-030 Mobile Notes can also work in a “mouse mode,” which allows you to directly hand-write in certain tablet PC applications; the mouse mode can be used with a computer as well, as long as the computer is running Vista or Windows 7. The kit comes with a pen and a base unit, one refill, two batteries, USB cable, user guide, and a CD with Myscript and the Note manager software.
Cons
The biggest drawback of this device is that quite often it will not capture your writings correctly; this can be partially overcome by creating a handwriting profile, using large margins, and learning how to properly position the base unit, but even then you can expect to still run into problems.
The Apcom E-pens are very simple and easy to use, as long as you take the time to learn how to properly do that. The initial software set-up has been problematic for some users, but once done, the two software products included in the CD, do exactly what they are supposed to. Overall, the e-pen can be a great time saver since it can quickly transform your notes into typed text and also lets you email these notes.
